***Trigger Warning *** This post mentions trauma. ***Trigger Warning *** This post mentions trauma. This time of the year is hard for me and my family. I know from reading books like The Body Keeps The Score (Bessel van der Klok) and The Whole Brain Child (Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson) that our trauma and experiences live in our body and can impact us for years after the intial trauma has occurred. And after years of repeated family crises after family crises at this time of the year navigating our traumaversaries at this time of the year can be hard. November is also the month that our eldest received their diagnosis of autism at eighteen years old and we were handed a diagnosis, a report and a list of websites and told that their adolescent mental health team couldn’t do any more for them and we would need to figure this next stage of our journey out by ourselves. (A confusing, overwhelming and terrifying experience for all of us). Since then we have grown and learned so much as people and as a family, that will and has benefited ourselves and others… And it can feel tough negotiating and processing all the feelings and emotions that come up especially at this time of year. Sometimes it can be hard to know what is a reaction to things that are actually happening in our lives now and what is a response to a traumaversary 😔 We as a family are managing this by being gentle with ourselves and each other and creating a safe space in our family to talk about our feelings and experiences, listening, validating, acknowledging and making amends. ✨New PLD Opportunity for ECE Teachers✨ I can ✨New PLD Opportunity for ECE Teachers✨ I can still remember how devastated I felt when I read that the average life expectancy of autistics like myself and my children were between 39-58 years of age. And the most heartbreaking thing about this is that it doesn’t have to be this way. Most of the trauma that causes these poor outcomes for neurodivergent children is due to living in a world that forces them to hide who they are so that they can fit into this world not designed to accommodate them and their ways of being. However the things that break your heart have a way of fixing your vision and this particular heartbreak helped steer me to my mission, my purpose, my why. To be an agent for cultural and systematic change in the way that Autistic, ADHD and AuDHD children, teens and adults are perceived, treated and responded to so that they can have better outcomes in life. This is the driving force behind the education, advocacy and coaching work that I do. The lack of knowledge and misinformation about Autism, ADHD and other forms of Neurodivergence and the consequences of this is complex and pervasive. It is visible in our histories, in the way that we speak about Neurodiversity, our sense of identity, our parenting and how the education and health systems provide support for us and our children. This starts with how we support our children in ECE and it is going to become even more important as more children are identified as neurodivergent. I realised very early on in my journey that my par I realised very early on in my journey that my parenting journey might differ from other parents. During this realisation it dawned on me that the longer I spent butting my head against the unmovable wall of reality the less energy I would have for my supporting my family and the journey ahead. This is 48✨ This week I have been reminded abou This is 48✨ This week I have been reminded about the cycles life in so many different ways starting with the Cycles of Life oracle card I pulled at the beginning of the week. As I sat down with my coffee this morning and reflected on the cycles of my life and journaled I realised just how many cycles there have been. I took a moment to honour, thank and forgive the versions of me who were have been on this planet in this lifetime. Each me learning the life lessons, living her purpose and laying the foundation for the next version of me to take her place. ✨I take a moment to be present with the me I am today as I will never be her again ✨ I feel like life is a constant cycle of letting go and renewal and midlife is the powerful time that we really start to uncover become who we are really meant to be. #midlife #nearly50 #midlifewomen
