I have been singing the praises of the benefits of I have been singing the praises of the benefits of self care for years. However, as a family coach and a mum I have noticed over time how my clients (and I myself) struggled to implement this advice.

In fact, the advice to practice self care and our inability to practice it can lead to more intrenched feelings of guilt and shame as parents something we need less of.

However, what I have noticed in my own life and when working with clients is that when change our focus to practicing self compassion, over time we treat ourselves with more care, consideration and kindness which makes it easier for us to take better care of ourselves as parents.

When we are dysregulated our brains switch to surv When we are dysregulated our brains switch to survival mode.

The fight, flight or fawn response in our nervous system can make it feel really urgent that we respond in the moment.

This sense of urgency often leads us to act in a way towards our children that we regret later.

When we are in survival mode we forget that we have another option - the option to take a pause, regulate and shift from the emotional part of our brains to the more logical thinking parts of our brains.

And the beauty of this is that every time we model our emotional regulation through taking a pause we help our children to learn this skill too. A skill they will use for the rest of their lives 💗

Not sure what to do when your neurodivergent child Not sure what to do when your neurodivergent child or teenager goes situationally mute due to a shutdown?

Here is what I did when my son recently went nonverbal.

It is important to remember that shutdowns are a sign of overwhelm for your child and a clear signal of a dysregulated nervous system and not a way your child is trying to manipulate you or ‘bad behaviour’.

It is important that we believe our children, stay calm and regulated with them and not try to force them to talk before they are ready.

Shutdowns and meltdowns should be taken seriously. If your child is having regular meltdowns or shutdowns it is a sign that something in your child’s environment needs to change to support and accommodate them.
